Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. Sift together cake flour, soda and salt; set aside. Cream butter, shortening and sugar. Gradually beat in eggs and buttermilk alternately with the sifted dry ingredients. Add orange extract. Blend until smooth. Add raisins and walnuts to the mixture. Divide batter into prepared pans. Bake at 350°F for 30 to 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove from oven and cool 5 minutes in pans. Turn out on wire racks to finish cooling.

Orange Frosting
Beat all ingredients together until smooth and creamy. Stir in additional orange juice as needed for spreading. Spread between layers and frost tops and sides of cake with Orange Frosting. Garnish with grated orange peel, if desired.

  • 2 Teaspoons orange extract
  • 1 Cup California raisins, finely chopped
  • 1 Cup walnuts, finely chopped

  • 1/3 Cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 4 Cups (1 pound) powdered sugar
  • 1/4 Cup orange juice
  • Grated orange peel (optional)
