Ingredients

  • 3/4 Cup shortening
  • 1 Cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 Cup molasses
  • 21/4 Cups flour
  • 2 Teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 Teaspoon salt
  • 1 Teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 Teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 Teaspoon cloves
  • 11/2 Cups California raisins or Zante currants
  • Sugar

Procedure

Cream together shortening and sugar. Beat in egg and molasses. Sift together flour, soda, salt and spices; add to creamed mixture. Mix in raisins. Chill dough 1/2 hour. Roll dough into 1 1/4-inch balls; roll balls in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on greased baking sheet. Bake at 375°F for 8 to 10 minutes.
