The US Dietary Guidelines on Sodium
The US Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that people without hypertension consume a maximum of 2,300 mg of sodium per day. People with hypertension, those over 40 and African- Americans should aim for a maximum of 1,500 mg of sodium daily. However, the average person consumes 3,400 mg of sodium daily. Sodium is present in most foods, though most Americans get the bulk of their sodium intake (about 80%) from processed foods.
