To create something truly unique, one must look beyond the expected.

Eating Better

How often do you ask yourself, “What should I eat?” Turning to almost any source, you will find admonitions to “Don’t eat this, eat a lot more of that, eat this instead of that!” So what’s a mother to do! There is no doubt that America is looking to eat better, and California Raisins are here with some wise choices to help you make that happen.

Just a few simple substitutions and easy changes, can point you down the path to eating right and living better. Take it one step at a time and you will discover that little changes can add up to dramatic dividends in your health.

Start with these during the coming holidays. If the dinner or party is at your house, your family and guests will hardly notice if you

1. Use the smallest plate that will accommodate the food. A large plate begs to be filled from edge to edge; while smaller plates will train the eye to serve up smaller portions. When the number-one nutrition concern is controlling calories, emphasize portion control.

2. Forget family-style. To keep the portions in check while discouraging second helpings, serve from the stove instead of putting a serving bowl on the table.

3. Make double vegetables — and serve them first. Make vegetables the focus of your creative cooking. Serve the veggies first, so they dominate the plate and there’s less room for those higher calorie foods like meat and gravy. Serve two vegetables or double servings of one and hold the butter or oil — and don’t forget the salad!

One last word, always take time out to be sure that the cook and her whole family are ready to enjoy each day during the holidays to the fullest. Eat better and follow Valerie Waters’ Tip of the Month, Exercise. “Exercising is a great fat buster, muscle toner and stress-reducer; good news for all of us multi-taskers out there. But it doesn’t have to take hours and hours at the gym; my philosophy is get in, get out, get a life!” she says. “Even simple steps like taking the stairs at work, going for a walk with the kids or some active playtime with them at the park can make a real difference.”
