California Raisins Cheer on Women from Around the World During the Third-Annual MORE Marathon

MORE magazine and the New York Road Runners host the world’s only marathon for women over 40!

New York, NY: MARCH 2006 – Over 4,000 women from around the world including elite runners and Olympians, arrived in Central Park for the third annual MORE Marathon. The participants included two-person teams and individual female runners and walkers age 40 and up. Some took on the full marathon at 26.2 miles around the park while others went for the half marathon at 13.1 miles.

The energy-boosting pasta party at Tavern on the Green, kicked off the ‘marathon’ of events in conjunction with this race while a two-day More Marathon Health Expo at the New York Hilton presented health and fitness lectures, product sampling, sweepstakes and more. Noted guests presiding at these events were Grete Waitz, Olympic silver medallist and 9-time winner of the New York City Marathon; Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon and win the 1974 New York City Marathon; and Lynn Jennings, America’s most decorated female distance runner. Charlie’s Angel Cheryl Ladd, star of NBC’s Las Vegas and author of Token Chick was More’s celebrity guest and spokeswoman. The California Dancing Raisin joined this elite group and served up a delicious Lentil and California Raisin salad.

“This race was inspiring not only for the marathon runners, but also for their family and friends who cheered from the sideline,” commented Michele Trujillo, Marketing Manager for the California Raisin Marketing Board. With over 15,000 people in attendance, the race provided a platform that supports healthy lifestyle choices combining exercise and diet to motivate family and friends while celebrating themselves,” she commented further.

This year’s More Marathon guests and winners enjoyed presentations by Nivea, while Poise served as Official Product Sponsor. Glaceau smartwater and the California Raisin Marketing Board served as Corporate Contributors. Prize Sponsors were Mauna Lani Resort and Accutron.

“We were so pleased to have the opportunity to sponsor this event. It was truly rewarding,” noted Gena Nonini, the only female member of the California Raisin Marketing Board. “California raisins are a healthy, all-natural food for women of all ages who choose a healthy lifestyle for themselves and their families, so it was a natural fit.”

“The Marketing Board’s strategy in partnering with More Magazine was to remind consumers that raisins are a portable and healthful snack right out of the box that provides an excellent source of energy. Raisins are also high in antioxidants, contribute dietary fiber and are fat and cholesterol free”, stated Karla Stockli, Vice President of Marketing for the California Raisin Marketing Board. “ During the Pasta Party and Health Fair it was further demonstrated how tasty raisins from California are as an ingredient in Granola Bars and Salads”, she concluded.

While in New York, the California Dancing Raisin also visited an early morning broadcast of Fox & Friends with Brian Kilmeade, E.D. Hill and Steve Doocy bringing a basketful of California raisin gourmet breakfast treats for all to enjoy. The California Raisin also joined the weatherman who couldn’t help but mention some California raisin trivia and the More marathon in Central Park.
